Jan, Feb, March, Arpil, May, June… and in a couple days it will be July. It’s already been 6 Months since I started my new job in Dallas! That is crazy! Without getting into all the day to day and month to month of the job, I want to focus on the city, people, pursuit of adventure, connecting people and reconnection with people…oh, and travel.
Dallas has surprised me with how many people are “doing their thing” and how different little areas can be from each other. If you go to Uptown a lot you will run out of money on $8 drinks but you’ll see a ton of beautiful people mingling…it is the people watching party of Dallas for sure. I like to go with friends and be the DD because it limits my budget and gives me a time when I “have to leave.” This is not the best area to go by yourself. Mostly groups but at least in pairs. (That is just a basic going out principal anyways)
Besides Uptown, I have found East Dallas/Lakewood to have good bars, music, and a handful of friends who call it home. As I sit in Starbucks typing this I’m also curious where all the small mom and pop coffee shops are. Crooked tree in Uptown is awesome. There another one (I forget the name) over in Lakewood. Then there is one on Northwest Highway called White Rock Coffee. That is cool…almost as cool as the dude that just walked in with a spider web tattoo on his elbow. I bet that hurt.
Knox/Henderson has surprised me with the number of good patio’s they have and Lower Greenville is a couple blocks east of there with a couple good places that overall seems kinda shady after midnight.
The people of Dallas: this is who I decide to spend my time with based on what I’m doing and where I am. So when I’m working, I’m around family a lot. When I’m at Church Sunday and Tuesday night, I see friends from PCPC who some I knew in high school and some I just met this last 6 months. Then I am in a home group on Wednesdays that has a great group of people who live life together very well….lot’s of group think here. Baseball games, dinners, bbq’s, help people moving, visit each other in the hospital, etc…great at living life together! Sunday afternoon has been the Ultimate Frisbee crew that is fun to see. About 15 people have decided to come regularly and with that then we have about 7 more that come when they can. It makes for a good long 3 hour game every week. Most people I hang out with on a given week have similar convictions, backgrounds, a drive for life, and a commitment to community. When I find other people that initiate activity and get togethers, I definitely try to hang out more with them.
The biggest adventure of being back in Dallas is trying to define my space, my time, and my daily and weekly schedule. I’m still looking at moving to find my own place when it makes sense. I still need to figure out where I like to be in the mornings. I need to figure out how much sleep and exercise I need to function. I need to continue to change things up so they don’t get repetitive. Space and time have been a constant thing I try to figure out without looking at how others manage this. When I can see how other people set up their desk or office or room or car or lunch or whatever, it gives me a better idea of how to make my systems more efficient.
Other big adventures are cycling around town! Trail running, Bike Polo, Concert going, reconnecting with friends, and going to AR every 3 or 4 weeks.
That is the main travel I’ve done the last 6 months, but I’ve also been to Austin, OKC, Tulsa, west of Fort Worth a couple hours, Denver/Boulder, Utah at Escelante.
A couple places I’m thinking about recently: Austin, Nashville, NYC, Denver/Boulder, OKC, Tulsa, Benton AR, Little Rock…Chicago, Mississippi, Los Angeles, and a few others.
So….I will try and post a couple pictures but this is just me trying to put words on a page again.
